When are children ready for Green Earth & Nature School?

In Scandinavian countries, children start school at 7, spending their early years before that playing and mastering the social and emotional skills needed for next steps. In this country, children are expected to be ‘school ready’ by 4 – with baseline assessments and phonics screening at 5.

However, according to PACEY research amongst parents and childcare professionals, school readiness means:

  • Having strong social skills

  • Coping emotionally with being separated from their parents

  • Are relatively independent in their own personal care

  • Having a curiosity about the world and a desire to learn

At Green Earth Montessori, a 'school ready' child needs to be confident in their own mobility and self-expression…and ready to explore the world around them, feeling curious and eager to connect with new people and places.

While developing independence & autonomy are an on-going process of childhood, in order to feel safe and comfortable in our FOREST SCHOOL’s dynamic environment, your child will need to independently:

  • Carry and take on/off: shoes, coat, hat & backpack

  • Keep track of personal objects & materials- seek out items as needed and return them when finished

  • Be aware of and be willing to stay with an adult or group, both inside and outside

  • Respond to and engage in communication with an adult and peers (either sign or verbal communication)

  • Self-initiate using the toilet and washing hands

  • Engage in listening & attention activities- story time, conversations, short projects, etc…

  • Have independence with drinking & eating

  • Show eagerness & comfort in being outdoors for extended periods of time

In order to feel confident in our NATURE SCHOOL’s dynamic environment, your child will need to be independent or working toward independence (with full parent support) with those skills.
